EMDR in Couples Therapy

EMDR therapy, originally developed by Francine Shapiro for treating acute trauma and PTSD, has proven remarkably effective for a wide range of clients struggling not only with defensive system trauma but also with relational trauma, closely linked to attachment and developmental issues. Since these early relational traumas shape adult relational strategies, EMDR is a highly suitable approach for working with couples. All couples facing difficulties can benefit from EMDR interventions, but this is especially true for those who are highly reactive and conflictual—precisely the ones most challenging to treat with standard couples therapy.

This workshop will present a conceptual framework for integrating EMDR with couples therapy, analyzing the modifications required in the assessment and intervention phases to effectively work with highly reactive and conflictual couples. Specific EMDR interventions will be demonstrated to enhance work with couples, and we will learn how and when to introduce these interventions to clients who initially seek therapy to resolve current relational problems rather than their past.

Day 2

Learning Objectives

Day 1

After this day, you will be able to:
Describe how couples therapy fits within the EMDR-AIP framework based on trauma knowledge, including indications and contraindications for using EMDR-based interventions in couples work.
Identify and differentiate the main types of developmental and relational trauma that underlie recurring conflict patterns in intimate relationships.
Describe how combinations of different types of developmental trauma lead to characteristic adult patterns of interpersonal conflict.
Identify the main patterns of conflictual interactions in couples and their associated reactive relational styles.

Day 2

After this day, you will be able to:
Describe the key elements of case conceptualization in the EMDR-AIP model adapted for couples therapy.
Identify specific targets in each partner's life history, connecting early attachment injuries and traumas with current conflict cycles.
List typical processing blocks and barriers when using EMDR with couples and describe strategies for addressing them within the EMDR-AIP model.
Describe common clinical errors made when extending EMDR to couples work and identify ways to adapt treatment plans and appropriately modify the standard protocol.
Design a comprehensive treatment plan for couples using the EMDR-AIP model.
